Planar MicroLens Array (PML)

The Planar MicroLens (PML) is a unique, two-dimensional lens array that integrates ion-exchange technology and photolithography. By diffusing ions through a photolithographic mask into a glass substrate, numerous microscopic lenslets may be formed in a multitude of sizes and patterns. An optional swelled curvature may be created on the surface of each lenslet to increase the numerical aperture if necessary. The PML is available in two distinct formats designed around two applications:

Parallel Processing

For applications involving parallel optical interconnections, the S-PML is an ideal way to increase coupling efficiency and device reliability. Conveniently packaged in a durable metal holder, the PML can be aligned and mounted to a laser diode array, creating a hermetic seal that will protect the diode array and improve its reliability. A swelled lens surface may be used to increase coupling efficiencies in transceiver applications, or a flat surface may be requested for easy collimation of VCSEL or fiber arrays.

Image Enhancement

In today's standard LCD panels, the opaque TFT regions account for up to 70% of the total display area. By placing a PML between the light source and the LCD, more light may be directed to the individual pixels, resulting in a brighter image with decreased heating of the panel. The size and pattern of the microscopic lenslets may be adjusted to match the structure of the LCD. Similarly, the PML may be used for enhanced illumination of CCD arrays.

Due to the large variety of sizes, patterns and applications of this product, NSG Europe will individually assist customers in determining the specifications for a particular application. Contact us to discuss your project.
